Tertullian
[edit]The conclusion that Tertullian gives evidence of a date for Saturninus that confirms the dating giving in the article is an error.
Tertullian states, “Let us see, moreover, how in the forty-first year of the empire of Augustus, when he has been reigning for xx and viii [28] years after the death of Cleopatra, the Christ is born. (And the same Augustus survived, after Christ is born, xv [15] years; and the remaining times of years to the day of the birth of Christ will bring us to the xl first year [41st], which is the xx and viiith [28th] of Augustus after the death of Cleopatra.)”
Test. Ad Judaeos, Chapter 8.
This means that he himself dated the birth to 3/2 BC, since that is when the 41st year of Augustus was. He also happened to believe this was under Saturninus. One can say either Tertullian contradicts himself, or that he confirms Saturninus was legate of Syria in 3/2 BC, or that he contradicts the established view. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Daniel MacGreggor (talk • contribs) 16:08, 25 December 2015 (UTC)
